What Is Myopia Control?
Myopia (nearsightedness) means that while your child can typically see things up close, things far away look blurry. It’s a common eye condition that often gets worse as kids grow.
Our experienced team offers myopia control methods to help protect your child’s vision. Myopia control isn’t just about clearer vision today. It’s about slowing down the progression of nearsightedness.
We will get to know your child to better understand their routines so we can recommend the best options. These might include myopia control contact lenses and small lifestyle changes, like spending more time outdoors and healthy screen habits, which can go a long way.
Myopia is often first spotted during a routine children’s eye exam, and early action can help protect your child’s vision for the long run.

Why Slowing Myopia Progression Matters
A stronger glasses prescription might not seem like a big deal, but higher levels of myopia can increase the risk of certain eye diseases later in life. Retinal detachment, glaucoma, and macular degeneration are all serious complications of high myopia (a prescription of -6.00 diopters or more).
Glasses or regular contacts help your child see better, but they don’t slow the progression of myopia. That’s because the underlying issue—eye growth over time—is still happening. Myopia control helps us do something while the eyes are still developing.

How We Detect & Manage Myopia
Myopia is usually detected during a comprehensive eye exam. There’s no stress or discomfort involved for your child. If your child has myopia, we’ll walk through a care plan together that may include:
- Myopia control contact lenses, such as MiSight 1 day, which can correct and help protect your child’s vision from getting worse as they grow.
- Low-dose atropine eye drops, typically used at bedtime, which help slow eye growth while still helping your child see clearly.
Every child is different, and we’ll help you find the combination that fits your family’s lifestyle and comfort level.
Screen Time, Outdoor Time, & Everyday Habits That Can Help
Kids today spend more time on screens, which can affect their vision, especially in the early years. One way to help protect their eyes is by building in regular breaks and getting more time outside.
Studies show that natural light and distance viewing can help reduce the risk of myopia.
We also recommend monitoring digital habits. To help prevent digital eye strain, you can use the 20/20/20 rule. Every 20 minutes, get your child to look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.
